In some regions, traditions surrounding marriage, beauty, and gender roles are deeply rooted in history, shaped by centuries of cultural evolution. While many of these customs are viewed as expressions of identity and pride, others spark debate and controversy around the world.<\/p>\n
Here are some of the most surprising\u2014and sometimes disturbing\u2014rituals and practices still found in parts of Africa.<\/p>\n

Among the Mursi tribe in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, women are known for their striking appearance\u2014most notably, large clay lip plates<\/strong>. Around the age of 15 or 16, a girl\u2019s lower lip is cut, and two front teeth are often removed to make space for a disc. Over time, the plate\u2019s size increases and can eventually reach up to 12 cm in diameter.<\/p>\n This practice began as a form of resistance during the slave trade\u2014Mursi women intentionally disfigured themselves to avoid being taken. Today, however, lip plates are a cultural symbol of beauty, strength, and identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the Ndebele community of Southern Africa, elongated necks<\/strong> are considered a mark of beauty and social status. Girls start wearing metal neck rings from as young as two years old\u2014usually a gift from their father. As they grow older, more coils are added, sometimes weighing as much as 6\u20138 kg.<\/p>\n The longer the neck, the more admired the woman is believed to be. However, these rings can cause serious health issues, including muscle damage, difficulty breathing, and, in extreme cases, even death. Despite this, the practice continues in some regions as a symbol of tradition and femininity.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In certain African communities, when two men want to marry the same woman, it\u2019s not unusual for them to settle the matter with a physical fight<\/strong>. While this might sound like something out of a myth, the battles are very real\u2014and often brutal.<\/p>\n Victory doesn\u2019t just depend on strength, but on the ability to endure pain without showing it<\/strong>. The woman\u2019s preferences are rarely considered, and tragically, these fights can sometimes be fatal.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Some traditional African practices involving sexuality can be difficult to understand from a Western perspective. In a few tribes, hospitality is so sacred that visitors are sometimes offered a host\u2019s wife for the night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In parts of West Africa, a groom must prove himself not only by paying a bride price\u2014but by sexually satisfying his future mother-in-law<\/strong> before marrying her daughter. In Kenya, it\u2019s said that any man may “test” a bride\u2019s virginity<\/strong>, and the woman is expected to comply without protest.<\/p>\n Meanwhile in Tanzania, women have developed a creative method of courtship: stealing a man\u2019s most valuable items\u2014like his shoes or farming tools\u2014to ensure he returns and gives them a chance to make their move<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n One of the most troubling practices that still exists in parts of Africa is female genital mutilation (FGM)<\/strong>. Despite being illegal in many countries, this harmful ritual is performed on girls as young as 10 years old\u2014often in unsanitary conditions and without medical care.<\/p>\n In Egypt, for example, FGM continues in secret despite government bans, leading to infections, long-term trauma, and even death. Many who support the practice claim it’s necessary for a girl to be considered “marriageable”\u2014a devastating price to pay for acceptance.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Today, nudity is often taboo\u2014but in Ancient Egypt<\/strong>, it was seen very differently. Men and women frequently worked the fields completely nude. Wealthy women proudly wore see-through dresses that showed off their figures, and leaving the chest bare was a common fashion choice.<\/p>\n Interestingly, women held real power<\/strong> in ancient Egyptian society. They could own property, get educated, and even become pharaohs. One famous example is Hatshepsut<\/strong>, Egypt\u2019s only female ruler, who was often depicted with a false beard<\/strong>\u2014a symbol of strength and leadership at the time.<\/p>\n Africa\u2019s diverse cultures are filled with fascinating, ancient customs\u2014some empowering, some controversial. Understanding these traditions requires a deep appreciation of history, geography, and social structure.
